California RCFE Caregiver Training Requirements
California regulations establish caregiver training requirements for Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly (RCFEs). Understanding these requirements can help facilities plan caregiver education and maintain organized training records.

Initial Caregiver Training

40 Hours Total
  • 24 hours may be completed through the Adsylo Academy online caregiver training program.
  • The remaining 16 hours must be completed and documented by the facility, including required facility-specific orientation, hands-on instruction, competency training, and other applicable training requirements.
  • Each RCFE remains responsible for determining and documenting that all required caregiver training has been completed.

Annual Caregiver Training

20 Hours Every Year
  • California requires caregivers to complete ongoing annual training.
  • Annual education includes required dementia care training and other required caregiver education topics established under applicable California regulations.
  • Ongoing education helps facilities maintain knowledgeable and well-prepared caregivers.

Medication Assistance Training

  • Caregivers who assist residents with the self-administration of medications may be subject to additional California training requirements.
  • Training requirements vary depending on caregiver responsibilities and facility size.
  • Facilities should ensure caregivers receive all applicable medication assistance training before performing these duties.

How Adsylo Academy Helps

Our California RCFE Caregiver Training Membership helps facilities manage caregiver education through one convenient online learning platform, so training stays organized and up to date year-round.

The information above is provided for general educational purposes only and summarizes selected California caregiver training requirements. Individual facility responsibilities may vary depending on applicable laws, regulations, resident populations, and caregiver responsibilities. Facilities remain responsible for complying with all applicable California laws and regulations.

i

Important Information

California regulations require that a portion of a caregiver’s initial training be completed through supervised, hands-on instruction provided by the facility.

Adsylo Academy’s online caregiver training is designed to complement facility-based training by delivering convenient self-paced online education. Facilities remain responsible for providing any required in-person orientation, supervised instruction, hands-on training, and other training required under applicable California laws and regulations.

This membership is intended for caregiver training only. It is not an RCFE Administrator Initial Certification Program (ICTP), Continuing Education (CEU) program, or administrator licensing course.

For the most current California caregiver training requirements, facilities should refer to the California Department of Social Services (CDSS) and applicable California laws and regulations.

Fall Awareness & Prevention — CDSS PIN 26-01-ASC

California CDSS highlighted fall prevention, post-fall response, personal rights awareness, and continuous quality improvement for adult and senior residential facilities. This supports prominently including Fall Prevention, Mobility & Postural Supports in the Adsylo Academy caregiver curriculum.

California approved a Section 100 regulation package aligning applicable Title 22 reporting regulations with current elder and dependent adult abuse mandated-reporting statutes. Adsylo Academy will address elder abuse recognition and mandated reporting as a separate caregiver training topic within its growing course library.

Training requirements may vary based on an employee’s duties, experience, resident population, facility practices, and applicable laws and regulations.
