Initial Caregiver Training
- California requires an initial total of 40 hours of caregiver training.
- Generally, 20 hours must be completed before caregivers work independently with residents.
- The remaining training is completed during the caregiver’s first four weeks of employment and includes required hands-on facility training.
- Initial training includes required dementia care education.
Annual Caregiver Training
- California requires caregivers to complete ongoing annual training.
- Annual education includes required dementia care training and other required caregiver education topics established under applicable California regulations.
- Ongoing education helps facilities maintain knowledgeable and well-prepared caregivers.
Medication Assistance Training
- Caregivers who assist residents with the self-administration of medications may be subject to additional California training requirements.
- Training requirements vary depending on caregiver responsibilities and facility size.
- Facilities should ensure caregivers receive all applicable medication assistance training before performing these duties.

This membership is intended for caregiver training only. It is not an RCFE Administrator Initial Certification Program (ICTP), Continuing Education (CEU) program, or administrator licensing course.
